Do we ever realize that the days are getting brighter or does the inevitability of winter prevent us from seeing what’s on the horizon?

Firebird (by Hernan Corera)

I miss those days in the orchard
Smelling the air, a savory blend
Of sweet peaches and crisp apples
When the sun rises on the horizon
From my window I could always see
A silver lining resting above the trees

I would pick the peaches in July
The feel of the star-burst flesh
Soft and ripe in my tired hands
A peculiar voice tells me to eat it
Could this fruit be talking to me?
The voice encourages me again

I place the peach in my basket
And take slowly take my leave
The summer heat has its ways
Of clouding the mind and body
For keeping my task, I will see
The silver lining the next day
